MOTAT (Museum of Transportation and Technology)




Established in 1960 and opened in 1964, the Museum of Transportation and Technology provides a hands-on exhibit of science and technology as its foundation. Located in Auckland, New Zealand, MOTAT offers a fun, interactive and educational experience for all to experience (namely kids). If you’re ever in Auckland, take a visit to the MOTAT and allow your little one to really explore their exhibitions that covers the history and development of NZ transport, technology and the Kiwi ingenuity.

MOTAT is also home to a vast collection of aircraft and land transport vehciles, used both for day to day use and even in the military. If your little one loves his history, you just know they’ll love this place.


The Museum of Transportation and Technology hosts many exhibitions throughout the year. They include:

  1. ACCELERATE: Driving New Zealand: This exhibitons explores the challenges, technologies, societal impacts and culture associated with automobiles. It highlights some of the most cherished automobiles in New Zealand history and showcases some life-change technology. This is a great exhibition that really brings a different aspect to MOTAT.
  2. Simply Machines: The Simply Machines exhibition introduces you to key principles that are the building blocks of large and complex machines in everyday use. This hands-on and interactive exhibition introduces the wedge, screw, axle and more! Discover how these machines make life easier and learn the physics behind it.
  3. Model Railway: One of MOTAT’s favourite exhibits, this exhibition captures the rich history of the North Island Main Trunk Line and delves deep into the most popular and iconic locomotives. A great way to step back into time.

There are many more exhibitions and we recommend you to bring your little one along for a great educational and wholesome experience.


Feel free to visit the original Pumphouse, or wander through their hisotic village. If you’re feeling special, take a ride on teh heritage train to the Aviation Display Hall, home to one of the largest aviation collections in the Southern Hemisphere. You can’t miss that!

If your little one has had enough of learning, MOTAT is also home to a small indoor play-room that is desgiend for younger children aged 1-5.

Location and What to Do

MOTAT is located close to the Western Spring Stadium, Auckland Zoo and the Western Springs Park. This serves as a great, central location to really explore Auckland and some iconic landmarks and urban architecture.

The museum itself is a 10minute drive from the Auckland CBD with bus accessibility available. There are regular seasonal events that are great for kids and families!

Baby Change Facilities

The Museum of Transportation and Technology does have baby change facilities and includes a private breastfeeding area.
